As any fan of Fallout games can tell you, the vanilla features will only get you so far.

I mean sure, wearing the vault jumpsuit and a random Power Armor may be enough to get you through your first playthrough. And enough alternative armors are laying around to keep you busy for a while.

But eventually cosplaying a Raider will get old.

You're always going to need more.

Luckily people realized this and modders of Bethesda games have had many years to perfect the art of tending to your every desire.

Whether you're looking for the ultimate armor to make you feel like an Avenger, or just want to make the game a bit more risqué by modifying everyone's outfits, someone has just the mod for you.

15. Vault-Tec Security Armor

Among my least favorite changes done to Fallout's aesthetic after New Vegas are those done to vault-related apparel, specifically security armor.

Modder ThatSpartacusGuy seems to be in the same camp as me, and they've created this mod to give the Vault Security Armor a bit more grit and realism.

It simply takes the New Vegas-style Sierra Madre Security Armor and adds it to the game.

This cool-looking armor is quite customizable, starting with the decals on the front.

14. CBBE Skimpy Armor and Clothing Replacer

Look, I personally don't like turning my Fallout 4 game into a Playboy magazine.

But a lot of people reading this are here just for that, and I owe myself to my audience.

That's why I'm showcasing TyronJam's CBBE Skimpy Armor and Clothing Replacer, which simply turns several vanilla outfits into very revealing versions of themselves to better show off Caliente's Beautiful Bodies Edition.

It's sexy, it's a bit trashy.

13. Vault Suit Utility Belt

On a more serious note, we have a mod that instead of completely destroying immersion like the previous one, will actually make the game more lore-friendly than before.

Modder SpiffySkyTrooper found the lack of a metal utility belt to go with the vault suit.

Like those seen in Fallout 3 and other entries in the franchise, to be a terrible conflict in Fallout's continuity. To fix it they designed a new one from scratch, trying to mimic the game's artistic direction.

The result is this sleek metallic belt that's as shiny as it's immersive.

And if you like covering your waistline with a shiny, metallic belt, why not go all the way and protect your entire body?

That's what HumanNature66's SIRIUS Assault Suit is here to accomplish, giving you a full set of lore-friendly robot-like armor that emphasizes your figure while also making you look very dangerous.

I mean look at those killer heels!

Not only that, but you can also wear regular pieces of armor over it. Making you virtually untouchable.

You're a piece of art and they're only allowed to look.

11. Sl00ty Vault Jumpsuit

Speaking of things that emphasize your figure…

You really can't have a Bethesda game without people trying to make their characters absolute bombshells, and what better way to do that in Fallout 4 than making your default outfit much more revealing?

It's just the default vault jumpsuit with ample cleavage and sexier textures that make your body look as if it barely fits inside.

It's a must if you have the CBBE body mod, and it's also the basis for many others.

10. MGS Beauty Beast Corps Armor

Continuing the streak of skin-tight jumpsuits comes the Beauty Beast Corps armor from Metal Gear Solid 4, now available in Fallout 4 thanks to modder Xarenth.

It may not be the most lore-friendly outfit ever, but it does look like something the Institute could come up with, so your immersion should be safe.

It's just one of the many bodacious femme fatale outfits modded into the game, and one of the very best.

Re-live your favorite moments in MGS4 from an entirely new perspective.

Now we just need the Octocamo suit for male characters…

9. Commonwealth Shorts

Doesn't anybody wear shorts in the Commonwealth?

It may be a post-apocalyptic Wasteland, but it must be hot sometimes!

To fix this un-immersive overlook on the part of the developers, modder DeserterX offers 16 new craftable outfits with shorts.

Not only can you survive in the summer, but you can also show off your legs, toned from never using Fast Travel.

Now it can be casual Friday every day.

8. Tactical Combat Swimwear

And if you want the ultimate summer Wasteland experience, you have to get Jmanumber1's Tactical Combat Swimwear.

It's tactical because… well, you'll probably confuse and distract your opponents while also keeping your guns and other equipment handy, therefore getting some easy kills and a lot of clout.

Having a harness with your gear and a headset on makes running around half-naked much more immersive.

Add a watch and a Paracord bracelet and you're essentially Lara Croft.

7. Courser X-92 Power Suit

Instead of covering yourself in protective gear, why not becoming more durable yourself?

That's the fantasy sold by DeserterX's Courser X-92 Power Suit, which will make you look like a state-of-the-art battle synth developed by the Institute to counter Power Armor.

This mod includes the full-body armor, goggles, a new PipBoy, and special craftable fusion cores that'll buff you up tremendously.

All this gives you a chance against anything from a deathclaw to a super mutant without having to wear a bulky Power Armor.

6. Concealed Armors

Choosing between functionality and fashion has always been a challenge for RPG lovers, especially in games with so many gear options as Fallout 4.

With this mod by creator Nisas, you can now make your protective armor completely invisible, allowing you to endure the harsh life of the Wasteland without compromising your looks.

You'll be 100% safe and 100% on fleek.

5. Cross Pre-War Cybernetics

On the other side of the visibility spectrum we have Cross Pre-War Cybernetics.

If there were robots before the war, why wouldn't there be cybernetic implants?

Modder Niero offers the cyberpunk-inclined a chance to take on the Wasteland with a fully customizable cybernetic armor. Including robot arms and the like.

Other than choosing their color, the player may also add different gadgets and other modifications to their cybernetics, from a flamethrower to simple firmware updates to expand functionality.

It's complex.

But that's precisely what makes it so good.

4. K-9 Harness – Armor for Dogmeat

Few things are as cute and heartwarming as a K9 operative walking around fighting crime in their cool-looking doggy kevlar vest.

Thanks to this mod by prolific creator FadingSignal, you can now enlist Dogmeat to your personal police force and outfit it with a beautifully designed and very practical harness that'll protect it from the dangers of the job.

Other than adding or removing the optional back and side pouches that give Dogmeat more carryweight, you can also choose the color and decorative patches you want on the harness.

Now this is what I call a 'good boy'.

3. Eli's Armour Compendium

Like many things in life, armor mods are usually as good as they are convenient.

Instead of scouring the Nexus looking for a bunch of outfits you'll grow tired of in a couple of days, why not install this pack with a truckload of looks designed by modding-celebrity Elianora?

With 50 new lore-friendly armor sets and 20 different accessories, you'll never want new cool-looking outfits again.

2. Black Widow Armor and PipBoy

As you progress in Fallout 4, much like in Skyrim and other Bethesda games, you start becoming a true force of nature, killing and conquering any place you set your sights on.

To truly embody this fantasy of being an unstoppable force, you need gear that anyone can recognize a mile away.

That's exactly what DeserterX offers with the Black Widow armor, an all-black grim reaper look, complete with a black PipBoy.

Not only is it the most badass mercenary armor ever, but the mod also includes a quest where you'll take on the mantle of the Black Widow and enter the world of souls to fulfill the original wearer's wish.

1. Armorsmith Extended

But if you're looking for the most bang for your time spent installing mods, then Armorsmith Extended is the best deal you'll find(and the bang comes at $0 so it's really a deal!)

This mod by Gambit77 is one of the most endorsed in the Nexus thanks to just how much stuff it does to improve the armoring system.

You can now wear any kind of clothing below armors, any hat or helmet will be compatible with bandannas or gas masks… the whole modding system is redone for more customizability – and that's not even half of it!

This is what the game should have been from the start.

For a lot of people, it's amazing that even after five years of its official release Fallout 4 remains one of the most played and talked-about open-world games.

However, take a quick look at Fallout 4's NexusMods page and it's easy to understand the reason.

The community built around Fallout 4 has continued putting out content on the regular ever since its release, becoming more sophisticated as time goes by.

Nowadays even the smaller quest mods can add over an hour of gameplay.

The bigger ones? They might as well get bought out by Bethesda to be released as entirely new, full-priced games!

Luckily for us, most modders don't pursue such lines of thinking. And we have a wide array of new storylines to pursue in Fallout 4's Wasteland.

To bring more attention to some of the most amazing expansions the game has seen to date, I decided to put together this ranking and I really hope you find something you like out of it.

15. NVIDIA's Vault 1080

NVIDIA's Vault 1080 by modder Ex0dus13 is a joint venture between Nvidia and Vault-Tec to show off new ways to handle volumetric lighting.

Which, if you didn't know, is used in-game to create a wonderfully moody atmosphere.

As such, the mod includes a questline where light will play an important role in leading you through a dilapidated church as you uncover the truth about a dark and twisted religious congregation and their fall from grace.

14. Fallout Who

Doctor Who is one of those things that, no matter what you mix it with, it'll turn out amazing.

So long as the work is put in to make it just incredible, of course.

Modder Demeggy has certainly put in the effort to make an amazing Doctor Who mod that'll see you uncovering your heritage as a Gallifreyan Time Lord, exiled to a post-apocalyptic Earth to live out your days.

In this mod, what you're really aiming for is the rewards. Which include a Sonic Screwdriver multi-tool, Time Lord abilities and yes, a TARDIS that serves as a player home that is bigger on the inside.

13. Vault 494 – A Vault-Tec Story

Somewhere in the Nahant area lies Vault 494, an as-of-yet undiscovered survival capsule where Vault-Tec expected to research the creation of a crime-free society.

With over an hour of content and scripted events, Vault 494 by modder Seddo4494 is a story of intrigue and tragedy where you'll get to see how the occupants struggled to achieve their objectives while being undermined by a most silent saboteur – human nature.

12. The Collector's Guides

This mod by Elys is a simple one, but also a great improvement for those of us who suck at finding collectibles.

It provides a series of in-game guides that lead you to collectibles such as magazines and bobbleheads. Just read one of them and you'll be directed to the items on the list.

11. Atomic Radio and Tales from The Commonwealth

I love listening to the radio in Fallout 4.

It's one of the most immersive things to do on your off-time while planning your next move or moving towards it.

And it staves off the maddening loneliness that comes with wandering the Wasteland.

Atomic Radio and Tales from The Commonwealth by NexusMods user KrisTakahashi offers you the opportunity to dive into the lives of the Wasteland's inhabitants in a way you never have before, all complemented by a new pre-war radio channel with 5 hours' worth of lore-friendly content.

Will you help the baseball team trying to ascend to heaven through their score?

Or get involved with the development of electronic mail?

Perhaps you'll just sit down and listen to the radio as the world goes by…

10. Maxwell's World

Whereas normal people generally play horror games when they're craving some adrenaline, I prefer to hit the Nexus and find a mod to wreck my nerves.

If you're looking for the same thing then you can't pass up this fully-voiced haunted amusement park story by modder Trainwiz.

In Maxwell's World, nothing is as it seems… or perhaps everything is, considering it's all spooky as hell.

Battle disembodied entities and crazed zombies with new weapons like the Heavy Incinerator or the Fireworks Cannon as you make your way to one of the multiple endings.

9. Ransacked Relays and Shuddersome Subways

Also from the mind of Trainwiz comes Ransacked Relays and Shuddersome Subways, two inter-connected questlines featuring new locations, unique bosses and a riveting storyline.

I can't say too much about these quests without spoiling the story for you, but if facing an insane AI controlling teleporters or impaling a Mirelurk Queen with a train sounds like your kind of thing… I'm sure you'll enjoy this a lot.

8. Operation Manhattan – New York

Some of us just couldn't get enough of the Brotherhood of Steel during the game's main quest.

Modder AlxRam was one such person, so they decided to create a whole new high-level BoS-oriented questline to satiate that thirst for camaraderie and Power Armors.

Operation Manhattan will have you fighting supermutants, along with heavily armed Raiders and Gunners through Central Park, Manhattan and even the city's subway to rescue a fellow soldier.

It's like Saving Private Ryan with a lot more radiation.

7. 50 Ways to Die at Dr. Nick's

If finding death and destruction around every corner is what you're into, then you'll feel right at home playing 50 Ways to Die at Dr. Nick's.

With 10 connected quests featuring puzzles, mysteries, plot-twists and a lot of explosions, this mod by prolific creator Rbdcc12 has become a classic in the modding community.

Even after clearing the storyline, your game will remain forever improved by the unique rewards.

These include your new player home with very detailed decoration, and lots of new craftables with… interesting effects.

6. Project Valkyrie

While I enjoy little self-contained adventures as much as the next guy, I get especially excited for mods that connect to the game's main storyline and change my experience in ways I would never have expected.

That's exactly what Project Valkyrie by Thuggysmurf does, opening the way to four completely new endings for the game's main quest.

Break the bindings of fate by brokering a peace between the BoS and the Institute. Or better yet, imprison Preston Garvey shortly after you meet him. It's your choice.

And that's only the tip of the iceberg that is this mod, which features over five hours of gameplay, four fully-voiced companions that interact with the story, and the possibility to completely overhaul the Institute once you become Director.

5. America Rising – A Tale of The Enclave

You've just woken up from 200 years in stasis, and the world as you know it has ceased to exist. As you try to piece together what's happened, you realize you're not alone.

There are others like you out there, trying to take back what was lost – the Enclave.

Modder Otellino offers players with a soft spot for the most conservative group in the Wasteland a chance to re-connect in a mod that's seamlessly integrated into the game, featuring hours of gameplay, two fully-voiced companions, and a sweet player home sitting on an abandoned oil rig.

4. Depravity – A Harmless Bit of Fun

Self-described as the largest quest and companion mod ever, Depravity offers players the opportunity to play a truly evil Sole Survivor in over 10 hours of absurd gameplay.

The mod, by creator ThuggySmurf, includes 20 interconnected quests, seven fully-voiced companions to escort you through them, and some of the most detailed player bases around.

Where Project Valkyrie offers you a new way to finish the game, Depravity is meant to give you more freedom in how you play the opening act.

3. Fusion City Rising

Fusion City Rising is both a quest mod and a complete expansion of Diamond City, allowing you to enter its seedy underbelly.

While it does feature several hours of gameplay, fully-voiced companions and the possibility to blow up a bunch of stuff with nuclear weapons, that's not what makes this mod special.

Rather it's the setting of Fusion City that really takes center stage.

This mod by ThuggySmurf opens the doors to over 20 hours of engaging gameplay that'll have you interacting with leftovers from the main factions in the vanilla game.

Exiles from the Brotherhood of Steel, Vault-Tec survivors and even remnants from Fallout 3's Enclave star in this ambitious expansion.

Explore new locations, claim new player homes and befriend two fully-voiced custom companions as you get to know the Outcasts and Remnants.

The Machine and Her by NikaCola is a gigantic quest mod with over five hours of immersive gameplay.
